Mom Watts FTW

Mom watts—it’s a thing.

Scientifically, it could be categorized as the increase in blood volume and surging hormones to provide an athletic advantage. In real life, it’s the increased mental toughness gained from balancing motherhood, a career, and elite racing—not to mention the continuous battle of separating your judgments of who you’re supposed to be as a mom and an athlete into fact and fiction.

At Fount Cycling Guild, we have a team of parents* who have mastered this balancing act and figured out a way to reach super mom status as elite racers, career women, supportive partners, teammates—and just overall inspiring to those around them. (*Note: We have great dads, too, but it’s Mother’s Day so let’s save that for June.)

To recognize the moms out there on this special day, we have compiled a list of insights gained from being a mom while also training and racing bikes.

You know you’re a bike racing mom when…

… 5:30 a.m. is not an “early” training time.

…you show up to race on two hours of interrupted sleep and stand quietly next to someone complaining about only getting six hours of sleep the night before…you race through your 30lb post-pregnancy weight gain while others refuse to carry two bottles because “it’s too much weight.”…you’ve bribed your sons to choose cycling over football so that training time is also family time

…you’ve incorporated bike cleaning into your children’s weekly chores.…you pay $100 for babysitting so you can “take a break” to suffer on a four-hour group ride in the freezing rain.

…you’ve become an expert at pressing the mute/unmute button on a work call to drown out the background noise of your screaming child and indoor trainer.

When you plan your training route based on where the car will be parked the longest between kid chauffeur duties.

…When a margarita is considered an electrolyte recovery drink.

when you can’t wait to go race, but immediately call to check in because it’s been an hour and you miss them terribly.
