Comfort, versatility, and durability are core characteristics of every gravel bike. But as the category has evolved, gravel bikes have become more specialized without losing their all-around nature. Instead, their performance window has expanded in multiple directions.

Andrew "Lespy" L'Esperance, athlete, engineer, and former XC World Cup racer, has spent countless hours riding and testing 3T gravel bikes. Few people know our geometries and ride characteristics as deeply as he does.
"The first question to ask yourself," explains Lespy, "is how you'll use the bike most of the time. Think about the terrain you'll ride most often, then work backward from there. The type of terrain determines the ideal tire choice, and everything else follows."

Racemax², our bike designed around the concept of fast gravel, now accommodates tires up to 51 mm WAM (Width As Measured) with 1x drivetrains and 48 mm WAM with 2x setups.
Extrema pushes those limits further, accepting tires up to 57 mm WAM. Combined with its taller stack and shorter reach compared to Racemax², it becomes the ideal choice for adventure racing, ultra-distance riding, and loaded bikepacking. Compatibility with both wireless dropper posts and suspension seatposts further enhances comfort and versatility.
These may seem like small differences on paper, but they become very noticeable on fast, flowing terrain, and even more so when the road turns rough, the bike is loaded with gear, and fatigue starts to build.
Adventure racing or bikepacking?
Gravel bikes were born to handle the unpredictability of roads, tracks, and trails. The real challenge is finding the perfect balance between pure performance, off-road capability, and long-distance comfort.
A comfortable bike is not simply more pleasant to ride. It gives you more control, greater confidence, better handling, and ultimately allows you to stay efficient for longer.
"Performance, whether in a race or during a multi-day bikepacking adventure, is deeply influenced by comfort," says Lespy.
And he's right.
Nothing drains energy faster than spending hours on a bike that feels out of place on the terrain beneath it, or one that wasn't designed to carry bags and gear.
Extrema was developed with these demands in mind. Its geometry is optimized for riding with luggage and for maintaining comfort across multiple riding positions during long days in the saddle. In addition to the integrated downtube storage compartment, shared with Racemax², Extrema also features additional mounting points on the frame and fork for bags and adventure equipment.
Racemax², on the other hand, remains firmly focused on speed, efficiency, and aerodynamic performance, making it the natural choice for UCI gravel races and fast day-long missions.
Carbon, uncovered
Every bike in the ITALIA X family represents the very best of our Italian manufacturing.
Produced at our facility in Presezzo, ITALIA X frames are built using our proprietary Filament Winding and RTM (Resin Transfer Moulding) technologies, starting from dry carbon fiber. It's a manufacturing approach that sets 3T apart from every other bike maker.
