The Badlands 2024 has certainly lived up to its reputation as one of the most grueling and picturesque ultracycling events in Europe. The race covers approximately 780 kilometers (about 485 miles) with an elevation gain of over 15,000 meters (49,000 feet), passing through some of Spain’s most remote and stunning landscapes, including the Sierra Nevada, Gorafe Desert, and Tabernas Desert.

Unsupported ultracycling means that participants must be self-sufficient, carrying all necessary gear and supplies, and are responsible for navigating the course, which is largely off-road and includes a mix of gravel paths, mountain trails, and desert tracks. The race is known for its demanding nature, pushing riders to their physical and mental limits. It is just about the rider and his/her bike.

Men’s Race

This year, with the sweltering heat adding an extra layer of difficulty, Alex Martinez from Reverb cycling team took an impressive 42 hours and 18 minutes to end and win the race! The Extrema Italia, equipped with the latest Sram RED XPLR, that he personally assembled a couple of weeks before has been the perfect weapon for the purpose!

With a great training and a well planned strategy, after last year 5th position experience, Alex managed well his race. He started controlling his pace, crossing all the deserts and facing every climb with confidence, arriving at the finish line in the quiet of the night.

Women’s Race

Svenja Betz, who won with her Ultra the gold medal at Unbound 2024 (find more here), continued her exceptional form with a strong second-place finish in the women’s race and 11th overall.

She confirmed that’s a perfect pairing!

Her determination and strategy were evident throughout the event, highlighting her consistency and ability to handle the diverse challenges of the course. She arrived at the last climb with a big smile, she’s the queen of long distances!

Just a few hours after the sunrise and we had the opportunity to witness the embrace between the two on the last climb were Alex was waiting for Svenja. This touching interaction not only celebrated their individual achievements but also reflected the team spirit and mutual respect that ultracyclists often develop through such intense experiences.

Team work

These results mark a significant achievement for both Alex and Svenja, as well as a proud moment for their team and supporters. Their success at Badlands 2024 caps off an impressive season, demonstrating their dedication, skill, and the support of their team.
